Democrats don’t know how to celebrate.

Sen. Chris Dodd

He’s right. The opposition from the right has been intense. Despite that, we have a solid (but not perfect) healthcare bill. We have an excellent financial reform bill. We have regulatory agencies who are back on the job. We have an economy that is slowly turning around. (While the economic turn-around is slow, it’s more sustainable than some of the previous booms financed  by consumer debt.) We avoided a truly catastrophic collapse. The domestic auto industry is saved—and we’re starting to produce electric cars. The Iraq war is ending. Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell is being ushered out the door.

There’s a lot left to do—but even with the Republicans dragging their feet on everything, we’ve come a long way in the past 18 months. But many on the left seem to be totally out of touch with the big picture. As crazy as they are, the Tea Partiers get it. They understand how much ground the right has lost. They’ve dug in their heels and done everything to stop any sort of change.

Meanwhile, the Democrats are angry because they got a pony for their birthday. They wanted a unicorn!
